Before any screens, I map how the product works, where it breaks, where users lose confidence, and what the real problem is beneath the surface request.
Most complex products don't have a visual problem. They have a structure problem. I work through IA, user flows, and decision points before touching UI.
I move from low-fidelity structure to detailed UI in stages, using prototypes to pressure-test flows and iterating on what breaks.
I work closely with engineers throughout, not just at the end, so constraints shape decisions early and the handoff holds.
